Stan Petrov Delivers Shock Verdict on Kasper Schmeichel That Few Celtic Fans Saw Coming

Stiliyan Petrov Backs Schmeichel as Celtic’s No.1 Despite Sinisalo’s Strong Case

Celtic legend Stiliyan Petrov has delivered a clear message regarding the club’s goalkeeping debate — and it may not be what many supporters want to hear.

Speaking on Scottish Football Social Club, Petrov insisted that
Kasper Schmeichel should remain Celtic’s first-choice goalkeeper, even though
Viljami Sinisalo has impressed during his recent opportunities.

“Both are good guys. Sinisalo has shown he can handle the pressure. But Schmeichel is still number one. He’s still really good.

We know the pressure goalkeepers go through, especially when the team isn’t performing well. Kasper has the mentality to keep playing at the highest level and produce strong performances. Martin O’Neill now has two good options — but I’d still go with Schmeichel.”

Sinisalo Making His Case

The debate intensified after Schmeichel’s difficult display against Stuttgart in the first leg defeat, where Celtic were beaten 4–1. Despite heavy criticism, he retained his place for the 2–1 loss to Hibernian, a decision that divided supporters.

It wasn’t until the second leg against Stuttgart that Sinisalo finally got his opportunity — and he took it confidently. Thrown into a high-pressure situation, he showed composure and authority that immediately sparked calls for him to keep the gloves.

Many fans would now prefer to see the Finnish goalkeeper continue in goal. However, whether manager Martin O’Neill is ready to make that switch permanent remains uncertain.

O’Neill’s Faith in Experience

O’Neill has repeatedly expressed belief in Schmeichel, stressing that every player experiences dips in form. The manager appears convinced that the Dane has the mentality and experience to bounce back.

Still, with Schmeichel’s contract approaching its end and no clear signs of renewal, sections of the Celtic support would not be opposed to a summer change between the posts.

Pressure at Ibrox

Sinisalo’s recent showing — particularly in a hostile environment with intense scrutiny — has strengthened his claim. The goals he conceded were hardly down to individual mistakes, and his overall handling of the occasion earned respect.

Questions remain over Schmeichel’s recent performances, with some supporters highlighting moments where he appeared hesitant, particularly when diving to his left. Selecting an out-of-form goalkeeper for a massive derby fixture carries obvious risks.

Attention now turns to the upcoming clash with Aberdeen, which could offer a major clue as to who will be trusted between the sticks for the crucial cup tie at Ibrox this weekend.
