Speculation over who will become the next permanent manager of Celtic continues to intensify, and one name that continues to surface in the conversation is Robbie Keane.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Republic of Ireland striker has been strongly linked with the Parkhead job in recent weeks, particularly amid uncertainty over whether Martin O’Neill would be willing to take the role on a permanent basis.
O’Neill returned to Celtic in an interim capacity and has helped steady the club during a crucial stage of the campaign. Under his guidance, the Hoops remain firmly involved in the Scottish Premiership title race alongside rivals Rangers and Hearts.
Despite his positive impact since returning to Parkhead, the experienced manager has repeatedly hinted that he may prefer not to take on the role long term.
That uncertainty has forced the Celtic hierarchy to consider other options for the future, and Keane’s impressive work abroad has certainly caught their attention.
Keane Impressing Abroad
The Irishman has been managing Hungarian giants Ferencvaros for just over a year, and during that time he has built a growing reputation. Not only has he guided the club to domestic success, but his team has also produced impressive performances in European competitions.
Keane’s side have developed a reputation for disciplined organisation, attacking intent, and resilience in difficult matches — qualities that have not gone unnoticed across European football.
With Celtic reportedly monitoring his situation, Ferencvaros sporting director Judit Berkesi has acknowledged that interest in their manager would be understandable given the work he has done.
She also admitted the Hungarian champions are realistic about the possibility that Keane could attract attention from bigger clubs and leagues.
“What’s in the media about Keane is always one thing. Of course, we talk about this, and he also openly and honestly tells us what the reality is in these cases.
The other thing is that it’s completely normal when someone does such a good job as he does.
The performance we have delivered in international matches this year is special. It is somewhat normal that such a personality, with a great football career as a player in one of the strongest leagues in the world, would attract attention as a coach.
He also entered a difficult situation with us because in January you don’t have much time to form your team or implement the playing philosophy that you want, and he solved that well.
It shows the progress of the club that we are now in a position where we can sell not only players but also head coaches in certain situations.
This possibility may also exist with Robbie in certain cases, despite the fact that he feels very good here and receives all the support possible.
For now there is no current interest, but discussions and planning for the future are always part of the job. We hope Robbie will stay with us for a very long time.”
Celtic Considering Multiple Options
While Ferencvaros would clearly prefer to keep hold of Keane, Berkesi’s comments suggest the club may not stand in his way if a major opportunity arises, particularly one involving a club of Celtic’s stature.
However, Keane is not the only name linked with the role.
Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou had recently been considered the bookmakers’ favourite after receiving praise for implementing an exciting and attacking style of football in the Scottish Premiership.
Other ambitious names have also been mentioned in recent speculation. Roberto Martinez and former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou have both been linked, although those appointments currently appear unlikely due to their existing commitments.
Craig Bellamy could also emerge as a potential contender depending on how Wales perform in their upcoming World Cup play-offs.
Situation Still Open
For now, the situation remains fluid.
A strong finish to the season under O’Neill could still change the narrative completely, particularly if Celtic manage to secure the league title. Some supporters have already begun debating whether the veteran coach should reconsider his stance if success arrives.
As things stand, Robbie Keane’s name continues to hover around the Parkhead rumour mill, and the reaction from Ferencvaros suggests Celtic may not face significant resistance if they decide to make their move.
